How to allocate tasks

My team is currently having some issues allocating roles and I was wondering how other teams handled these types of situations. We currently have 2 builders, 2 drivers and a notebooker. We want to focus on CAD and a quality notebook but we are unable to figure out how to properly decide these roles. The drivers and builders are not interested in moving over and any attempt to force someone out of their roles ends in trouble. Would it be better to keep things the way they are or should we try to streamline for competitiveness.

Hello! First of all, in robotics, you have to be flexible. Yes, everybody should have a role, but everybody should know something basic about every other role as well. I’m wondering, maybe you can give more than one role for everybody? For example, you could have a head builder and then someone who is both a builder and designer. Maybe your notebooker can both notebook and CAD. And the drivers can help with both design and notebooking, since they are the ones testing the robot itself. You can also maybe rotate roles, though this could be a bit of an overload for everybody to learn every role. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Imo, having two people listed as only driver is a plan for disaster. Driving is something done after the robot is completed so I would highly recommend that they pick up other roles as well such as researchers or programmers.

Agreed. Two drivers are unnecessary. Maybe make the less skilled one a backup. and even then. you shouldn’t have someone who ONLY drives. Most teams don’t have this model for a reason.
