They work pretty well for picking up things like rings, balls, and maybe even cubes…
We used them for the last two games that used balls on the front of our “nose intake” to roll the balls in. We saw another team that used them on their scoop to hold the balls in the scoop.
They were also used on a robot that had to grip and move a full bottle of water to make the grippers work better.
I’ve also used them on a robot that had to climb a short flight of stairs (3" risers), they grabbed the stair front and lifted the robot up and forward enough so the front wheels could grab.
They are pretty handy.
These can also be used as spacers on the axle pieces for an intake system that does not necessarily use the intake rollers as the main intake piece (e.g. zip ties intake systems). This allows the intake pieces to stay evenly spaced and not move.
They work great for picking up “POOF” brand foam balls and mini-basketballs too!
I used the intake rollers to build something to pull the balls in, lift them up, and spit them out into a bin. I used about 6 - 8 intake rollers per axle and about 8 axles to build it. It was expensive for all of those intake rollers, but they worked really well.
I got my idea from a picture that was in the VEX Gallery on RobotEvents.com A team had used the intake rollers on their robot to pick up balls for a competition.
Strangely enough… that seem to work pretty well as a roller in an intake system for picking up objects.
… though there are other uses as well. One of my favorites is someone who used them as part of a rubber-band-shooter. Each rubber band would be stretched from a common point at the front of the mechanism back around one of the “fingers” on the Intake Roller. As the Intake Roller spins, the rubber-bands would be launched one at a time.
