Introducing: VEX Entry Points, Digital Engineering Notebooks and the REC Library!

So I go to click the template for google slides, and it came up with an access denied screen

Which template document? IQ or V5?

Can you copy the link you are trying to open? I would be delighted to help if I had that link. I can trying it on multiple browsers incognito/private mode and different platforms.

Access denied is usually a Google account setting. I would try the previously mentioned method of using a Private Browser window to see if that resolves it.

Otherwise, please take a screenshot of the error and we can see what we can do. Thanks!

Try logging out of your school account.

School districts love blocking access to shared google stuff (especially if they’re using office products.)

Schools usually block public documents outside of their domain as @LuxembourgIsACountry alluded to.

Small thing, but it looks to me like the 4.6mm spacer is much thinner than 4.6mm in the diagram on the last page

Thanks for creating the templates.

My team started in the summer before the templates are announced. The kids would like to transcribe their earlier notebook entries into the new format for a consistent presentation. Should they backdate those entries?

Yes. But say "Moving to new format this page is from MM/DD/YYYY and today is MM/DD/YYYY. I had a team that had a flood damaged book and did that and the judges were fine with that.

Curious why you say that? I use OneDrive for everything and haven’t lost anything yet. I was planning for my teams notebook and programs to be kept on a OneDrive. What’s the concern or is this a one off comment?

I love it when your high school deletes your Onedrive, instantly deleting a whole treasure trove of scanned notebooks, competition videos, school assignments, and 4 years worth of class notes!

/s. This is why you make backups guys.

At this point discussions about cloud storage is off topic.

This will be exceedingly useful with my team.

Anyone else familiar with one note? I think adapting the slides into that format would be the most useful way yet. You can put anything on those anywhere. And set up templates for mid pages/ competition notes etc. slightly steeper learning curve. I’ll push my teams to try it this year and keep you updated on how it goes.

go for it!

I think a common misconception is that the VEX Digital Notebook is the only approach … and that judges will favor it over any other digital tool… both are false… What VEX offered is one of many approaches, and freely offered parts rendered to 2D in multiple scales.

This is similar to VEX EDR and VR parts offered as 3D models that you can adopt into your own libraries for your CAD and improve the models for the programs you use.

Looking forward to the myriad forms of digital expressions have this season!

Honestly, using a pdf markup software like notability or onenote + the templates as the PDFs could be a great alternative to using powerpoint or word/google docs. You would still be able to “write” your entries (I’d recommend investing in an apple pencil, it seriously saved my life when doing assignments/taking notes) but in a digital format. Just like with powerpoint or word, the notebook could be easily exported/printed when it comes time to submit it in time for an event.

Yeah I have an iPad and pencil available for them to use. We’re going to try that out for sure. The only issue with that is Apple has a limited UWP version of one note, so we still need a PC and he full version 2016 or up to save templates. So we will utilize both. Someday I hope to acquire some Microsoft surface pros with stylus to capture best of both worlds.

Just to tack on to this, the REC Foundation has added their own Entry Points and a variety of other shortcuts (along with a new short link of recf.org) to make finding content on their website easier.

You can find a list of those at http://shortcuts.recf.org/
