Well here is an example of what i am extrudign on inventor to cut the piece adn there is the error…ideas on what to do will be helpful! or should i just get a new piece and try extruding it again?
I would try getting the original piece again, and this time creating a Sketch over the entire surface of one of the top sides of the Angle piece. Make a rectangular sketch or something over the part you want to cut off, and make sure that it extends well over the edges of the part, so ensure that you remove everything. Then try Extruding it.
If you don’t understand let me know, I may be able to post screenshots of what I’m trying to explain.

There’s more then one way to cut a piece but the way I do it is as follows.
-
Make a copy of the original part, named it trimmed or something suitable and open it.
-
Create a workplane where you want to cut the part.
- Use the split tool, select trim solid and select the workplane, check the direction of the arrow showing what will be removed.
- Apply
- Turn off visibility on the workplane.
Thank you soo much!!! i will definately try this when i cut a part from now on!!
sorry for the late post guys but i had another question about cutting parts. how do you cut shafts? i feel pretty dum asking this but ive been trying everything for the past hour…any ideas on what im doing wrong or anything
More or less the same way, create a workplane which is offset from the surface on the end of the shaft, then use the split tool.
Wow that sounds easier than what I have been doing. I’ve been creating a 2D skecth on the long side of the shaft, draw a rectangle over the part I want to cut and extruding with the cut option.
haha thanks again jpearman. i just more closely looked at the directions you gave me from before and now it worked.
and btw i found this link in the sixbar thread i think it was mayb, idk which one but its this animation you made…

^thats looks really nice!!
So here’s the tutorial for cutting shafts.
To create a 3.5 inch shaft from the 4 inch shaft.
-
Make a copy of the original 4 inch shaft and give it a new name, for example, SHAFT-3500.ipt
-
Open the new part in inventor.
-
Create a workplane with an offset from the end of the shaft.

Select the plane to offset from.

In this case we want to remove 0.5 inches so set the offset as -0.5.

- Use the split tool, select trim solid and select the workplane. Check the direction of the arrow showing what will be removed.

- Apply

- Now hide the workplane, save the part and you are done.
