Hello, so I was wondering if Vex IQ gears like the sprocket would be compatible with a Vex EDR robot and is it a good replacement for the Vex EDR sprocket. If so then…
A: Is it recommended to get IQ gears than EDR gears for my Vex EDR robot?
B: Would I have to buy a driveshaft for the Vex IQ sprocket or is it compatible with a Vex EDR driveshaft?
C: Are the Vex IQ gear a lower quality than the Vex EDR gear and does the Vex IQ Sprocket and gears have a lower performance rate than the Vex EDR Sprocket and gears, or are they the same?
D: Are IQ gears compatible with EDR gears. Can I link them together and will it move?
E: If I was on a budget but needed gears for my EDR robot, is it a good idea to get Vex IQ gears?
A. No, they probably won’t line up in the holes of vrc metal plus they are made for lower strength applications
B. The drives shaft is the exact same
C. See A
D. No
So, unless a product is identical to a regular vex part (like the IQ drive shafts are) it is illegal to use VEX IQ parts in competition. If the products are identical, there is no reason to use them over real VEX parts.
There looks to be some misinformation in this thread that I hope to clarify.
VEX IQ gears are fully compatible with the VEX EDR system, however they are not legal for use in the VEX Robotics Competition. They share a common pitch diameter and roll angle and are therefore able to be used together.
The steel shafts are compatible between VEX IQ and VEX EDR.
There are two main ways to increase the strength of a gear in a gear train. One is by changing the modulus (making the teeth bigger) and the other is by increasing the face width (making the teeth taller). Since it is not possible to change the modulus of an existing gear, if there are problems with gear teeth breaking try increasing face width.
VEX IQ gears have a smaller face width than VEX EDR gears due to the lower anticipated loads in a typical VEX IQ application. If there are problems with gear teeth breaking in a specific application, try increasing the face width by adding a second gear next to the first or changing to a High Strength gear.
Yes, VEX IQ gears are compatible with VEX EDR gears.
As a reminder, VEX IQ parts are not legal for use in the VEX Robotics Competition. They are, however, perfectly legal and good for prototypes, projects, and proofs of concept.
