Is a dr4b tray a good idea?

So, We are rebuilding and my builder wants to do a dr4b tray while I want to do a normal tray bot style. It can get towers easily but the robot will be more complex than the normal tray bot style. Should I do it? We think we can do it and we have lots of time to make it… Thank you

I know that if the arm doesn’t work but the tray does then we are a tray bot sort of… Should we take the risk?

REMEMBER— this is my builders idea and if he doesn’t get his way then he does not put full effort on the robot. It annoys me.

Ok, with a tray-DR4B, motor sharing is going to be a problem. Either you guys are gonna have a 3 motor drivetrain or a 1 motor lift. Instead of lifting your whole entire tray apparatus, I would suggest making your intake arms DR4Bs, because then your robot can still reach the top tower whilst having better motor sharing.

We are doing 2m drive with chain and 2 m arm lift.

Ok, then a DR4B tray would be the better option. If you guys build it, then you guys are gonna need a lot of time to practice driving (getting used to driving while the lift is at max height, maybe stacking on top of stacks) so that you guys don’t tip over the robot (but you guys should add anti-tips anyway).

OKay, I want to traybot but my builder will have a fit

Then have a compromise and make the arms DR4Bs

Then that will hit the trays right??

I think it’a a good idea. You’re already state qualified, and you have a good chance of design at Kalahari considering your design award streak, I’m pretty sure that design qualifies for worlds there, and you’ve already torn apart your previous robot. Just go for it, and if by late January, things aren’t working out, built and program a 3 stage tray bot. You have about 3 1/2 months to get it good.

Edit: Don’t look on the Kalahari qualifying awards to see which ones qualify because none of them have been updated yet. Sorry.

Make it geared together, not chained

Why make is geared not chained. Now should we play it safe and make a fast, lightweight dr4b or a risky one that can get the high tower. The safe one can’t but we can still descore and score but it is difficult to do both.?

My builder wants risky and i want safe

Cuz chain can snap, and with best of one you shouldn’t take that risk

True. I wish we could do 4m drive but can’t

If you go for the highest tower though, you will be easily tipped over. And if you don’t, there’s no benefit for a dr4b with intakes attached. So if you are really building a dr4b, then attaching it on trays might be a better idea in my opinion

Yes chain can snap and gears will certainly not just snap on you like its more flexible friend, but make sure you don’t rule chain out as a viable option. From what I have seen chain mainly snaps from one of 2 reasons, way too much tension, or a bad link. Tension will artificially create force between chain links in addition to whatever loads the chain might carry. This severely limits its capabilities, causes it to break more often, and adds more friction. Bad links are most often the cause of “random” chain breakage. A bad link is where the link will no longer attach around to the next link well and gets pulled apart easily. I advise you to mark whatever link your chain breaks on clearly and if it breaks again on that link, throw it away.

Chain will still snap, but as long as these general guidelines are followed you wont have many problems.

Now if you do use chain anywhere where a lot of force will be put through it, then it is best to make sure the system can still function (maybe not as well) without it. One example of this is our current drive where the wheels are chained together, but the back powered wheel can still work just fine without the chain. In addition to this our chain has only ever broken once on our current robot (we have driven it for probably 20+ hours by now) and, fair enough, it did happen quite randomly.

If you know how to use chain it is a very valuable resource, don’t be afraid to use it in the right circumstances.

We have direct drive on back wheels

I’m guessing your not from a very defensive region, cuz the number one cause of our chain snapping was other teams

A dr4b tray can be a good idea depending on how long you have till competition and how fast your team works and also it just depends to if your team is up to build something a little complex but very worth it in the end

DR4B are an unnecessary but a nice to have commodity in this game. What I mean is that you should be able to easily clear the field with a ten stack flip out tray (one bar) with the an alliance and opponents. There is no real need to stack 6-10 plus cubes on an already existing 10 stack in my opinion.

We have good treaty or in our region but if we do this, we can get towers better and also get design more since it will be different and we can make it very competitive

Butternubs I dont think you know what design means.

Read up on the Judges Guide. It has a lot of good information pertaining to awards.
