Is there any way to fix the “ Legacy Field Control Detected” when we plug into the competition field?

During our last competition my team had a consistent error of “Legacy Field Control Detected”. This caused us to be unable to use our autonomous in any way because we were able to manually move during autonomous, the judges had us put down the controller if we wanted to compete. We checked that our radio, controller, and brain were all updated correctly. When that didn’t work we switched our radio and controller. When we switched them, we didn’t have the issue for about two matches before we got the same error again. I don’t see any documentation, does anyone have as idea what this is or how to fix it?

This occurs when the V5 Smart Field Controller detects a V5 Joystick controller the middle port as active (the RJ45 VEXNet port). This usually occurs because a team inadvertently plugs the V5 Smart Cable from the field into the middle port and not the left or right RJ11 V5 ports. Two cases occur, a bent pin shorts and makes it look like the robot is in Driver or Autonomous mode, or it can be more dire and bricks the controller completely. From the sounds of it, the bent pin is making it appear that Driver control is enabled.

When you unplug from the field, does the Play icon appear on the V5 Controller? If so, look in middle RJ45 port for bent pins.

When we did unplug the controller it did still have the play icon showing, That may be it, because one of our drivers tried inserting the cable to the middle port at first.

That does happen - so look carefully inside RJ45 port well illuminated and magnifying glass - look to see if pins are shorted. If so, power off and carefully with non-conductive material separate them.

If it is fixed, and you do not use RJ45 port, you can plug it with non-conductive material - there is a library article for Smart Field Controllers which point to a source for rubber like plugs.

When this occurs and it is not due to being plugged in to the RJ45 port in the controller, I move the v5 SmartCable to a different port on the v5 SmartField controller.

I’m sorry for reviving a somewhat old post, but I need to ask a question. At the US Open today, I was a bit rushed while setting up at the field as we had been somewhat late to our match. While plugging into the field, I accidentally plugged into the center port. However, I had not turned on the controller yet. Is the controller damaged? We played the match without the error that the original poster had, but this was our last match of the day.

you are probably ok.
