Ladder climb

Our team has room for 2 more v5 smart motors, and I was thinking we should use them with the 100 rpm cartridge and a torque gear train to climb the ladder, is this worth it? Because it would take a while, I’m not sure if we should do this or spend the motors on strengthening the intake or drivetrain.

In my opinion, you should work on improving a functioning robot in any way you can before moving on to another goal. While climbing can be rewarding, without a strong drivetrain or intake, there would not be a valid point. Also, in your case, I would work on improving the intake.

First off, love the name
I would recommend strengthening your existing robot before you consider hanging. While hang can be important, wall stakes and negative corner play can be a great concern for any team trying to climb the ladder. Leaving your alliance alone to try and keep the match together can be very stressful (believe me I have been in that situation). It would be more effective for you to strengthen your scoring and perhaps make a wall stake mechanism if you can. Wall stakes and negative play can cause a swing in the points while hanging just adds points to your own score with no impact to your opponent. While both are good ideas, I feel that prioritizing a consistent robot is most likely the best move at this time. It will allow for you to score better in matches and give you and your teammates a better chance at succeeding in matches.

what drivetrain are you running? how many motors.

4-motor, 6-wheel, omnis on the outside, traction on the inside, 200rpm cartridge

I would invest those motors in a 6 motor drive. Maybe gear it if you haven’t already. That in my mind is better then a hang. Because of the capacity to defend corners. It also doesn’t take as long to implement.
