Let we give more meaning for VEX?

Why don’t give more meaning for VEX?

such like the FIRST’s and STEM’s mean.

now,let we give more meaning for VEX

I wont take this too far, but Vex used to be used by FIRST. Now Vex is on their own and growing very rapidly. They will gain more academic support quickly as educators realize the benefits of using the Vex robotics platform.

That’s my unofficial take on the situation,

Excues,I mean is:

We can let V on behalf of a word or phrase!

like the T is on behalf of Technology,

and like the R is on behalf of Recognition,

The I is on behalf of Inspiration,

Similarly,We can let E and X both on behalf of a word or phrase,

then,VEX is no longer a VEX!

Everyone will know VEX’s new mean.

I think this to is very easy to achieve take English as mother tongue’s person

What you are attempting to describe is an acronym.

In another thread you have had the official answer from IFI Robotics, the manufacturers of VEX, that “VEX” does not mean anything. It is just a name.

The word “vex” has several meanings, one of which is to puzzle or to challenge, but that is not an official “meaning” for the name, and IFI makes it clear that VEX is NOT an acronym.

If you wish to make up an acronym, go ahead. You could say it means “Very EXcellent” or “Visual Educational eXciting”.

But please keep in mind that there is a difference between a word (which means something) an acronym (that “stands for” something) and a name (that doesn’t really mean anything). Whether you want VEX to be an acronym or not… it isn’t. It’s just a brand name like Coca-Cola, Chevrolet, or Blackberry. (Had to put a Canadian one in there, too.)

I hope that helps. I know English can be a strange language, and very difficult to learn. Thank you for trying, and for making your writing as clear as you can.

Thank you very much.

I just wish to know how can make up an new meaning for “VEX”

I think “Very EXcellent” is a very good new version of the VEX’S meaning.

And the “Visual Educational eXciting” is very good, too!

You have given me great help, Now, I do not think the VEX is “VEX”

Hi lyfly,

I am happy I could help. Is the reason you want “VEX” to have more meaning so that you can translate the name more easily?

I know when a Chinese-language newspaper in Vancouver did a story about one of my classes that they had to translate my name into Chinese characters. Many of my students speak Mandarin, and one of them (after reading the story) said, “Mr. Brett, your name looks funny in Chinese.” (it sounded funny, too… kind of like “Bo-le-to”)

It had not occurred to me before then that an English name could be translated into Chinese… I don’t know why I had not thought of that because we translate Chinese names into English all the time!

Is the reason that you are looking for a meaning or acronym so that you can better translate “VEX” into the Chinese language and Chinese characters?

If so, I know there are students who are fluent in both English and Chinese… maybe they can help with translating the name “VEX” into Chinese characters. IFI may even want to think about having an “official” translation… it might help with marketing in China.

VEX has sales and manufacturing operations in China:

Innovation First International (Hong Kong) Limited
Unit 710, 7/F., Delta House
3 On Yiu Street, Shatin
New Territories, Hong Kong

Yes,I want “VEX” to have more meaning so that i can translate the name more easily!

Really!

Mr. Brett you are real “Bo-le”!

maybe you and your student can help with translating the name “VEX” into Chinese characters,

I think IFI should do this thing, too.

That will help with marketing in China.

But is there an “official” translation of “VEX” into Chinese characters?

A Chinese company wouldn’t market a product in North America without at least trying to come up with a name that could be expressed in the local character system and be easily pronounced by the locals. Perhaps lyfly has identified an opportunity to help increase the number of VEX teams in China.

Nearly everyone who could answer this question was at the All-Star competition at Disney World the last few days, but they do read the forum. I’ll see if I can find out and get it posted here.

There is a Chinese translation of the Clean Sweep rules
http://vex.innovationfirst.com/docs/vex-clean-sweep/vex-clean-sweep-manual-chinese-20090811.pdf

VEX appears in it more than once as three English letters.

My guess is that IFI is happy using the three English letters.

Another possibility would be to create a name which sounds a little like “Vex” but has meaning in Chinese. Perhaps something like “fu xue”: “fu” = complicated, “xue” = study. Unfortunately, it’s not a very good transliteration, because Putonghua has no “v” sound or “e” sound, except together with n or ng.

I’ve always thought the transliteration of AIDS as “ai zi” bing, which translated means “love disease” was very clever.
