To go vertically up a wooden wall, a magnet would not help you. For a common household wall, I would recommend wheels that are wrapped in some sort of adhesive material, tape is the first thing that comes to my mind, but it is definitely not the best thing out there.
If you google, “vertically climbing robots”, you can find some excellent ways to alter the VEX wheels in order to get them climbing up some walls.
Why don’t you just use a system of fans to suck air on the underside of the robot so the robot “sticks” to the wall? Then the wall won’t get all sticky and you don’t have to worry about the adhesive weakening.
I thought about that…but the thing is, that the fan system might have to be a bit more developed than a simple fan attached to the robot. And depending on the weight of the robot, the system of fans can get complex and cumbersome.

but then it would have to be on a perfectly flat surface

You don’t HAVE to buy the tank tread kits, but it might be a good idea.
Once again, if your wall is not metal, then putting on magnets would not help you climb vertically.

Well, you could just use the wheels that come in the kit, but if you’re attaching magnets, it might be a better idea to use the tank treads.
