Making a grid with the optical shaft encoder

We are planning to use the optical shaft encoder next year for auton but we are a bit confused as to how we can make a grid of the field with the optical shaft encoder and the vision sensor. we are also open to using the inertia sensor so if anyone has any tips regarding that sensor please let us know.
