Memorable/Funny Stories from VEX

Just wondering/curious/bored, what are some things that have happened in your vex career. This is just to have a good time and nothing too serious.

well, this is the first year our club went to states. it wasn’t my team, but a fully first year team with two 7th graders and a high schooler on it. they actually won regionals with a clawbot! i’ll tell you what. while i didn’t go myself, the level of excitement for them was through the roof! it wasn’t us this year, but we’re coming next year so be ready! see you at worlds!

In my 1st year in VRC, we didn’t do so hot at some of our tournaments. Didn’t win any awards, but did pretty good at one (lost in semis and were ranked 4th), but not good enough to qualify us for states. On the way home from that comp, a team member of mine finds out that there is a tournament at FAMU that we could go to (to hopefully qualify for states). We went, and after a stressful finals, ended up winning the event. This qualified us for states.

Early this year I missed our first tournament because of having to be rushed to the hospital. Scary experience.

what happened?

I was basically having symptoms of a stroke and couldn’t put words together. When I tried to pick up the controller to go to the first match I couldn’t hold it right. They took a ct and mri and didnt find anything so they ruled it out as a very weird migraine. Also my whole right cheek was numb and my right leg was numb

Yea me to I was really worried. It was overall just a weird event. It was also after a basketball game because after the game i went right to robotics. Hopefully it wont happen again which I doubt it will.

Last year, at almost all my competitions I would have little nosebleeds. This year, I didn’t have any… until a week before our 3rd competition where my almost bihourly nosebleeds were so severe, I missed school and more importantly robotics for the next week and a half

A funny story from vex would be my first year. Ah those times! It was weird as none of us had any experience and we didn’t even know how to build a robot or even a base! My team struggled to scrap a robot together and it didn’t even have any flat bearings (which was a nightmare). So after our first competition we were wondering why our scissor lift was wobbly (I know scissor lift! Don’t judge). We took apart the whole thing and we saw little holes where the metal was connecting the axles. Not knowing that the holes were caused by friction between the axle and metal bar we were convinced that someone sabotaged our robot by drilling holes into it. It took us a long time to realize that the holes were caused by us not using flat bearings.

I got one from last year cuz I built a robot while being evactuated b/c woolsey fires. I built a bot in 5hrs and got judges award. Then the next comp our school was shut cuz of mudslides from after the fires and we where still evacuated so I had to sneek into school to get

Memorable from 6th grade:

We were the first 6th-grade team (and 2nd team overall) in our middle school to make it to states. Back then, a lot of relatives of the team members were really supportive of VEX, so when we all qualified, they bought mini plastic medallions for us. They lined us up and put them around our necks and cheered. They were really sweet; I still remember the grandma that said she didn’t know anything about robotics but knew how to make some mean cookies and the dad that showed everyone that ctrl Y was paste because it looked like glue coming out of a bottle.

The first competition of 12th grade:

Our first competition of the season was the last one offered in our area :skull: (cause our team got approved really late in the season). We virtually had no driving practice and we had just finished building our robot. When we arrived, the coordinators missed our number, so we didn’t have a table and every time we had to tell someone our team number, they stepped back or couldn’t repeat it fully (@66661A, what an innocent number). Our match was the 2nd one so we were thrown on the field before we could fully prep and we hadn’t even determined who our coach was. The entire match consisted of all of us hysterically making grunting and yelling noises, pointing fingers, and laughing our pants off. We couldn’t even stack properly so we just spit all of the cubes into a corner and they piled up- we won. :joy:

There are even more fun memories I would love to share but I don’t want to make this longer than it already is. VEX has just been such a huge part of my life and I’m glad to have spent my last year with @66661A

My team, 241D, had a pretty rough start this season, and we never really got very far, although we all had a blast doing it. Our robot was a fairly simple dr4b with not the best build quality, and we struggled to even make it lift for most of this season. One competition in December, we just decided to ditch scoring and play defense for all our matches with our jank-bot. The referees decided that they would give out ‘yikes’ (which were printed on slips of paper) to teams who made them cringe a bit because they came too close to violating rules. Long story short, we got about 8 yikes that comp for reasons like losing a wheel, having semi-illegal Christmas lights, and turning our dr4b into a wallbot. Somehow, the refs predicted that somebody would mess up that bad and went out of their way to design and build a ‘yikes award’. It was epic

Our first competition of the season, my team had a six motor drive pushbot. We got DQ’ed twice for violating the protected zone and knocking down scored cubes, both times in matches we could have won. Needless to say, myself and the other team member that drove during those matches hasn’t driven again.

This story is kinda embarrassing, but the first competition of the season, we had a traybot, and the problem was that I forgot to bring the intake lock I had been working on at home. The entire competition we couldn’t even intake cubes. Trying to lighten the mood a bit, I built the “Jankbot award.” I’ll post the picture when I find it. Also, we credit us winning a competition to the almighty Walter. image
