Motor ports blinking red

So recently I acquired some motors that seem to have been used from our mentor for our drivetrain. Yet ,whenever I plug them in and use the brain’s device menu to spin the motors, they spin at 600rpm (blue cartridge) for about 4 seconds then limit themselves to about 100-200rpm. When I try to increase the speed, it wont go any higher than the previously said values. I have looked at other posts regarding motors blinking but all of them the motors will not work whereas mine does. Is there a way I can fix this or are the motors done for?

Are the motors connected to a lift, drivetrain, etc? Or are they just free spinning?

I have tried spinning them on my drivetrain, which is a 360 rpm (36:60) 8 wheel drivetrain. I have also tested these motors free spinning aswell and the same problem occurs.

Try free spinning (not connected to anything) them first. If they do spin normally, it’s a build issue. If not, then it is an issue with the motor itself.
Have you had any other motors do this? If so, the it’s a build issue. If not, then the motor itself has an issue.

I have tried them free spinning and the same problem occurs. I also have another motor that does the exact same thing. Also I’m aware it is not a build issue as I have tested other motors on the drivetrain and the same problem has not occured.

They could be damaged internally. I believe (not 100% sure) devices will start blinking at a set rate if they haven’t recieved a handshake (communication packet) from the brain after a set amount of time, which would suggest a faulty wire or issue with the motor’s internals. I’m not sure what would cause it to be limited in speed other than some damage to the driver or something causing physical friction. You could also try spinning it without a cartridge and measuring how fast it gets.

Remember the motor red LED will blink for two different reasons.

  1. slow blink, once per second, motor is in the bootloader (ie. no communication with the V5). This can mean a dead port but will also occur during V5 firmware updates as all ports are disabled when doing that.

  2. fast blink, several times per second, motor has been selected on the V5 devices screen and is being controlled by the dashboard.

That answers part of the question why the ports were blinking but I still do not understand why the motor tries to limit itself. I have also tried helping it along using just an axle with a gear attached and when I do, it speeds up to its normal rpm. Then when I stop helping the motor, it reverts back to its “limited” state.
