Motor won't update

We have everything hooked up properly, but the brain does not seem to be connecting with the computer to update a motor. It says that Motor 10 needs an update. All motors and the remote are connected to the brain and connected to the computer.

We have tried rebooting the computer as well as redownloading the firmware update wizard.

It states “No smart products found” and "Check your SMART product’s computer and power connections.

Been trying to update for 45 minutes with no results.

You need to be using the Vex IQ Firmware updater, and not the SMART Firmware Upgrade Wizard. The SMART Firmware Upgrade Wizard is for SMART boards. This is the website to download the Vex IQ Firmware updater: http://www.vexrobotics.com/vexiq/software/firmware/.

HI Mrs.B,

We’re sorry that you have encountered this issue. Unfortunately, the screenshots of the program that you posted do not appear to be related to VEX IQ.

To help ensure that you have the correct VEX IQ Firmware Update Utility installed, please go to www.vexiq.com/firmware.

From this page, please scroll down to the link to download the VEX IQ Firmware Updater (OSX). If you visit this web page from a Windows computer, it will have the Windows version download link displayed by default. If you need the direct link to the Mac OSX download, this link is available below:

http://link.vex.com/vexiq/downloads/…are-Update-mac

After you download this DMG image to your computer, please open (mount) the DMG image. You will then see a Finder window with this displayed:

To install the VEX IQ Firmware Update Utility to your Mac, simply drag-and-drop the VEX IQ Firmwate Update Utility icon in this Finder window onto the Application folder shortcut also in this Finder window. Once that is complete, close out of the Finder DMG window and unmount the DMG image by dragging the DMG image onto the Trash can icon in the Dock.

Now you can open the VEX IQ Firmware Update Utility by going to your Applications folder on your Mac, and clicking on the VEX IQ Firmware Update Utility icon. When opened, the VEX IQ Firmware Update Utility will look like this:

To update the firmware for the Smart Motor, connect the Smart Motor to your Robot Brain, then connect the Robot Brain to your computer using the USB cable. Install a Robot Battery into your Robot Brain, and then turn on your Robot Brain. When connected, the applicable update buttons will change from disabled to clickable if the firmware needs to be reinstalled or updated - to update, simply click the Update All Components button at the bottom of the screen.

Lol! I wonder why the SMART board updater keeps popping up! Thanks for noticing that!

Now when we click to run the right VEX IQ firmware, it says that it is already running, but we don’t seem to be able to find where it is running. The screen with the components does not show up anywhere.

Hi Mrs.B,

On some recent versions of Mac OS X, the default security setting may only allow programs from the Mac App Store to run unless the user explicitly allows the program to run. This security feature of OS X is called Gatekeeper.

If your security setting is set to Mac App Store only, you will need to go to System Preferences, then go to the Security & Privacy screen and choose the button “Allow applications downloaded from Mac App Store and identified developers”.

Then to open the VEX IQ Firmware Update Utility, go to your applications folder, and either right-click or Control-click on the VEX IQ Firmware Update utility, and choose Open from the popup menu. A security confirmation box will then appear asking for verification to open this file downloaded from the Internet. After clicking the Open button, the program should open.

More information about this security setting is available on the Apple web site:
