My team's and my Distance sensors aren't working

We have been trying to make our sensor wok but it hasn’t. Please help us.

Please give more information.
For example, if you are programming in PROS or VEXcode (VS Code) or normal VEXcode.
However, for now, look at https://kb.vex.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050696511-Using-the-V5-Distance-Sensor. Can you do the stuff in the setup section? If not, what is happening (e.g. distance sensor not showing up, distance value is off, etc.)

how is the sensor not working? is it not detecting said object?

The sensor is detecting the objects while testing the sensors, but whenever we try to use our code, it doesn’t detect the object. We also think that it is a hardware problem, because even when we use a functioning code, the robot is unable to sense distance

Make sure the sensor is tight on the robot and make sure it works when it is on your robot. One issue we had when we were using this sensor was it was not tight so it ended pointing at the ground and not detecting anything. Also could you post your code you are using that helps when trying to find an issue.
