Need help creating a lift

I’m new to Vex and working with a team of 4th graders. They are part of a competition that needs to lift a 5-inch cylinder about five or six inches off the ground and have it go “flat end” first into a hole.
They are thinking about using the claw and a lift. The question here is about the lift. What is the best type of lift to use? We thought about the linear motion kit, but I don’t know what else we need to make an elevator. Gears? Chain? motor?
Any help from a veteran would be appreciated.
Also, if someone has a better design suggestion, we would love to hear it. Many thanks!

The classic rack and pinion system might be a good place to start
