New Coach

I am a new coach for my school. I was needing ideas on how to start our meetings before we get the new robotics items in. They are on back order and we will not get them until the end of September. I know the students will need to know how to use the pieces and put together robots, so I am thinking practice builds for them. All the students are new to robotics this year so any tips or ideas will help!

One lesson that is immensley helpfull, both with my students, as well as when I was taught, was gear ratios. How they work, why they benefit mechanisms in some situations and how they are helpfull. But, it is VERY IMPORTANT to teach the numeric value of each gear, to make calculating gear ratios 10x easier, such as a 60t being a β€œ5” a 24 being a β€œ2” etc.

Its probably very important for them to understand WHY Vex is fun, and the real world benefits to joining a robotics program such as this. For practice builds, depending on the student goals, you can tailor to their needs, like they can get a head start on the game, or they can have fun a design, like a working dinasour out of Vex parts. But the truth is, the whole point of a Vex game is to have fun, and to improve your critical thinking skills.

Well, if you don’t have parts to build the robots you could start with theory … and some inspiration … for example, by watching films like:

  • Spare Parts 2015
  • Underwater Dreams 2014
  • More Than Robots 2022
