New Game

Yes - It’s true the alliance scores are computed, for the final time, at the end of the match.

I strongly suspect that if we dig into the etymology of the word “score” we will find that it began as a noun and was then “verbed”. Hence the confusion/ambiguity that can creep into situations like this.

However, in the narrow context of the Gateway rules, the rules define “scored” quite clearly, so there is no reason to “consider” an objected scored or not scored. According to the rules so long as those objects are in certain locations, they are simply scored, no modifier is necessary.

“Remove unnecessary words” —> “Remove words”.

I am a little confused with the “gates.” Here are the rules:

<SG11> Drivers or Coaches may lift their own Gate at any time during the Match. Once lifting of the Gate had begun it must be finished promptly and the Gate cannot be dropped. Both Gates must be lifted and latched before thirty (30) seconds are remaining in the Match. Violations of this rule will result in a Disqualification of both teams on the offending Alliance.

<SG12> Robots may not interact with the Gate for more than five (5) seconds or after there are thirty-five (35) seconds remaining in the Match. Robots may not interfere with the raising of the Gate, nor may they lift the Gate. Violations of this rule will result in a Disqualification.

<SG13> Teams are not permitted to lift their Gate when an opposing Robot is legally touching their Gate. Violations of this rule will result in a Disqualification of both teams on the offending Alliance.

<SG14> Robots may not enter or exit an Isolation Zone while the Gate associated with that Isolation Zone is down.

What exactly is the point of the gates if we have to open them sometime in the match and they must be opened by a human? Are the gates meant to keep the opposing alliances robots out of the Isolation Zone? Couldn’t that be achieved with a penalty instead? Also: does anyone know where I can find the Gateway Game Animation? I have checked YouTube and UStream and found nothing. I think that I am not the only one with confusion about the gates. Thanks.

Yes… among other things. There’s a physical barrier between your two robots… think about it!

No… it is WAY BETTER to make things “impossible” than it is to “patch” a game with penalties. You do not want to see a game with 5000 penalties to say where you can and can’t go.

Plus, cost-benefit analysis for taking a penalty is sometimes in favor of the penalty.

i really dont like the fact that we can not descore any of the balls or barrels. and im still confused about the gates, we cant go over them so we have to lift them strait up and go under them?

Does the human have to lift the gate?
Can a robot or human lower the gate after it is raised?
Can the red alliance go into the blue allaince isolation zone?

You can descore them alright. Just grab that black Negator Barrel and put it safely on top!

Please read the rules thoroughly and I think you will find the answers you are looking for. These are the sorts of questions I jokingly put into my earlier message.

You will get much more benefit out of reading the entire set of rules yourself than you will ever get from asking us to read them for you and then answer your questions.

This isn’t a chat window in which redundant or unresearched questions simply scroll out of sight. It is a discussion thread that becomes clogged quickly if folks don’t do the appropriate research on their own before writing posts.

Please don’t take this answer as a reprimand or a rude non-reply. Instead take it as as important advice for the rest of your life.

If you have questions about a specific rule, cite the rule and ask the question. You and everyone else will get much more benefit out of the discussion that ensues.

I’ll follow gblake’s example and ask a question!

Does that mean any part of a robot cannot cross the plane of the Isolation Zone, or does that mean at least some of the robot must be in the Interaction Zone?

Has “Gateway: The Movie Version” been released yet? I’m having a little trouble wrapping my brain around this game.

If a gate isn’t lifted before there is only 30 seconds left do teams get disqualified?
This game is somewhat understandable yet at the same time really confusing…

Checkout “<SG11> Drivers or Coaches may lift their own Gate at any time during the Match. Once lifting of the Gate had begun it must be finished promptly and the Gate cannot be dropped. Both Gates must be lifted and
latched before thirty (30) seconds are remaining in the Match. Violations of this rule will result in a Disqualification of both teams on the offending Alliance.”

Before I read the rules more closely I thought the gate had to be lifted by the robot but instead it has to be lifted by a human.

SG5 and SG6 allow for touching robots before they leave their tile to repair robot breakdowns which is a change from the past.

But could someone tell me what they think of rule:
<SG10> Robots are not permitted to break the plane of their opponents Alliance Starting Tile during the Autonomous Period. Violations of this rule will result in the offending Alliance losing their Doubler Barrel and Negation Barrel.

It seems you will have to be more accurate with your programming so you don’t go to the wrong side and accidentaly touch the opposition tile.

It should be an interesting game.

i also think that rule was intended for all the “ram” autonomus’ this year
i also like the penalty (no white/black barrels instead of a DQ)

i like the game very much!
although we thought of about a zillion loopholes with the “repairing robot” rule…

Does anyone knows how the skills challenges will work with this game? Just wondering if I missed part of the manual or something.

Some of the questions I have thought of.

How will the gates work? Up I would assume, but I am not sure.

Also can you reposition your robot in programming skills if it’s touching a starting square?

How do you introduce pieces?

In past seasons the skills challenge rules have been released a little while after the main 2-v-2 rules.

This is the only video of Gateway I have seen so far: - YouTube

Guys, Ho nestly its still early and when the offical forum for askign questions is out thtas when the rulebook will be modfied to help teams understand.

Its like any game, aka last years game, tipping the ladder i dont think the designs would of consideredx that early on in the rules

the ram autonomous is the best autonomous so i have no idea why they want to get rid of it… IT WORKS EVERY TIME

They want to get rid of it because it renders the hard work put into a real autonomous useless.

I highly doubt the rule was intended to get rid of “ram autonomous”. Much more likely is that, since humans are allowed to touch robots that are in their starting square at any time during the autonomous mode, they were concerned about safety.

I’m interested to see which teams take advantage of human interaction in autonomous. Maybe a button press to make sure the robot did something?

To me the interaction in autonomous, teams could use it more like Lego league. Have your robot complete a task than come back, tell it it’s next task and it can come back again. You could change what the robot does based on what other teams have already done in autonomous, like score in an empty goal.
