New to Robotics: VEX IQ Super Kit vs HEXBUG VEX IQ Robotics Construction Set to Start

My son is in 6th grade and has been bugging me to get him started in robotics. In reviewing the many options, I decided that VEX seemed to be the best quality and support combination out there, so I’ve decided to go this route.

My next issue is which set to start him out with, the VEX IQ Super Kit P/N 228-2500 or the HEXBUG VEX IQ Robotics Construction Set P/N 228-4444. I am unable to find a true parts list for the HEXBUG kit, so I cannot do a true comparison between the contents of the two kits. The Super Kit appears to have approximately 100 more pieces and is about $100 more. However, depending on what those pieces are, it may be worth the extra expense.

Also, I am curious regarding the relationship between HEXBUG and VEX IQ as the VEX website doesn’t even list the 228-4444 part number and searches come back with no results, yet they have the assembly instructions in their “Explore” section.

I am open to any suggestions as I am new to all of this. Thanks in advance…

I would go with the Super Kit if I were in your situation. It has a rechargeable battery, more sensors, and a storage case among other things.

The part number you mention (228-4444) is for the retail version of a starter kit. It is very similar to 228-3060 found on the VEX site but has a different battery (you supply AAs), no charger, and no storage case but does have an added sensor or 2.

I would also highly recommend checking out the REC Website if your student is interested in competitive robotics. Hope that helps, a VEX staff member can probably tell you 100% accurate differences in the different kits.
