So we (as in me and 2 other people) are working in a middle school Vex team, Do you guys have any tips? We got into states (Im surprised since this the first time our school did Vex V5), but this is out FIRST TIME so I’m not sure if its gonna be very difficult or what I should watch out for…
Notebook is your best friend, last year we had a year 1 team, their bot was, well not the highest performance, but their note book was good enough to get them a design award. I would try to get a good bot year 1, but I think that the NB is the best spot to shine, or yapp.
I‘m also a vex middle school student and it has been a great learning curve. Thongs that have helped me get started is not worrying about your first year or tournement. It might sound weird but not focusing on how good you do helps you learn a lot. I also recommend watching someone like @9MotorGang on youtube to learn how to build a drive base and he does game manual reviews. Then the next year you have learned somethings and what it is all about and you try your hardest. That is how I was learning, your team may be completely different.
One thing to remember about getting to a region championship event is that all of the other teams also had to earn their spots, so unlike an early season event where you have teams that don’t have much experience, you’ll find teams that are (mostly) well developed. Make sure you have a 30-second “about our team” planned for when teams come asking about your capabilities when they are scouting. Think about your game strategies and how you can best take advantage of your strengths when paired with other teams that can also score well… and than might include becoming more of a defensive bot sometimes. Communication with your alliance partner is critical!
Also, if your region is like ours, more of the Worlds spots go to judged awards than to robot performance, so make sure to practice for interviews and spend time on your notebook. Good luck!
Find your next alliance partner as soon as possible/convenient after a match. Plan auton, take a look at their robot, some strategy.
Congrats! Your positive energy is great!
Congratulations! That’s super impressive for any team, let alone a first year team. Did Finalist qualify you for worlds?
Sadly no, we are on a waiting last but I doubt we will get there this year, and next year im switching to FTC and we are passing down the team to the 7th graders.
