Having 2 seasons of VEX robotics, I wanted to establish a club in our school. The current plan is to meet once every 2 weeks (will meet more frequently during competition season), and compete in VRC as a team next season. What information should I cover in our very first meeting? What could we do in the initial club meetings, before next season starts?
Maybe if you are with new teams, what is expected in the club, of the robot, and go over game manual?
Maybe do the stem labs?
To be honest, I suggest that you need to change your schedule first. Your club should meet at least three times every week. During the start of a season, my team usually starts with a one-two hour analysis of the current Vex game. The purpose of this is to ensure that everyone has a clear understanding of the game. Another thing we go over is the Engineering Design Process and the Scientific method because our notebook is structured according to those methods.
our school has two meetings every week. I would shoot for at least one a week.
I agree but 3 times is a bit much. My org is about 1-5 times depending on which part of the season.
I dont think that’s too much… my team meets every day and we still wish we had more time
to be truly successful you need to put in a lot of time. my team would meet for 2-3 hours every day, and we still felt like we didn’t have enough time.
I tried being a homeschooled team one year and even though I had all the time in the world, it still didn’t feel enough, but I think the philosophy “work smarter not harder” would have been beneficial.
for sure, one good strategy is to do all the design and thinking outside of meetings so you can spend meetings actually working on the robot.
for example, notebooking, CADding, brainstorming, all that can happen outside of meetings to save time and streamline the actual process of working on the robot.
It doesn’t have to be the first meeting but learning about the uses of different types of hardware and electronic components would definitely be useful. I went in green this year and was lost in which parts to use when.
Yea, I agree with that, but sometimes the problem is that whoever is in charge of notebooks or whatever, might neglect their duty.
Might I ask also what region you are in? You may be able to find someone on the forums in the same region that could provide info on good tournaments to attend and or who the best teams are.
ay is banga gonna even compete this season?
Oh and OP, yeah every 2 weeks is pretty rough. Unless it was l literally like a meeting that spans all day.
hard to say. i’m personally putting more of my time towards BattleBots these days
Our team meets 2 times a week for 2 hours. I soo wish we had more time to practice
