Not enough space to hold gear on

I’ve been working on a 36:48 3.25" drive train and I realized there isn’t enough room for a thin spacer, let alone a shaft collar to hold it on. Does anyone know an easy fix so the 36T gears can’t slide around?

You should use a thin 36T gear, that way you have enough space for both

Would that work for competition though? Just concerned a thin gear could break mid match

So really you have two options

  1. Make it a screw joint and make the gear closer to the beam and put a nylock to hold it

Or

  1. Use thiner spacers off McMaster Carr

Or

  1. Spend a lot of time sanding down the spacer to get it really thin

Use very thin spacers from McMaster-Carr (McMaster-Carr). Alternatively you could also source these from taking apart a vex claw. Good Luck in High Stakes!

It’ll work. I haven’t known any LS drivetrain gears break.
The only places you usually don’t use LS gears are on applications that require a lot of torque and power (like catapults, punchers, heavy arms, etc.).

Unfortunately it can’t be a screw joint as it’s driven by the motor, but I’ll see if I can find some of those thinner spacers. Thanks!
I did also think about sanding the spacer but wasnt sure if that would work, I might try it.

Thanks! I’m not fully sure I would want to do that just because I don’t want to risk it but I could always try it if need be. Just thinking that any pulling matches with the mobile goals may require more torque.

Your gears won’t snap, unless your running a 20 motor 100 rpm setup and you have it pushing a 50 pound box.

Even then, I doubt it would break.

Thank you! I was also thinking would something like this work? Basically the same as using a small gear spacing wise but won’t have to worry about breaking (even if it probably won’t)

I am not a big fan of cantilevered shafts off of motors, you may get skipping…

But, if you go down this route,

  1. move shaft collar to other side of c-channel near motor and use a capped shaft… you can use manufactured one from vex, or hammer down one end of shaft so it can not go through gear to hold gear in place.
  2. use thin nylon you can save a little more space. Screw joints are nice until they are not.

yes that would also work but when you use omni wheels because they are slightly bigger it might hit the shaft collar. But you could always add more spacing for the wheel.

Sorry for any confusion, from what I can gather cantilever means it’s only supported at one end yes? I’ve been working on fixing this issue first, there will be another c-channel on the outside with bearing flats on one side and shaft collars on either side to help support the shafts. Thank you for the tips though!

Awesome thanks! The omni wheels aren’t hitting the shaft collar so assuming this doesn’t cause skipping or anything it should be good to go.

Correct, some people do just shove a shaft into motor only in one side and expect no issues to arise.

You can also attach screw joint on opposite side of chassis and have bearing flat, in this way the two gears will line up better.

Yeah, my coach would never let us do that even if we wanted to lol.

Ooh thank you for the suggestion. In that case, I might add a bearing flat on the other side and adjust the screw to line up.
