Notebook Review / Advice (in either direction)

Attached here is what should be a public PDF copy of our team (6978B)'s notebook, with names omitted. I wrote most of it, but I am going to get my team to make more since we just started, and 70% of it was written pre-season, and we also haven’t had a tournament yet and have maybe half of a drive-base built at this point. Some pages are unfinished, and there will, of course, be much more throughout the season, and I plan to write one today as well.

I’d like to get a review/advice of my notebook, and I could do the same with some others.
Notes:

  • Uses Google Slides
  • Format is my own, I started before VEX official format released for this year, and I like mine better anyway.
  • Mostly written by me, but don’t worry, I’ll get my teammates to write soon enough.
  • Third year VEX team, I was notebooker for the first 2 years with both years being on a team that shared 4/5 members (including me) with the current one (someone quit, and another person joined us)

Here’s the page I wrote today:

I like what you have. Here are my 2 cents:
Pros

  • Having the engineering design process and rubric is great.
  • Good game explaination.
  • I love how you list the Vex Fourm! I think I might try this too!

Cons

  • I don’t think listing every rule helps with the purpose of the notebook.
  • I also think listing every award isn’t nessary, just the ones you want to win.

Overall, I think ou are off to a great start!
p.s. what is up with the shadow of this tank drive?!

Found an image on google images, used remove.bg and it got a bit confused, but I couldn’t get anything better.

Thank you for the feedback, honestly rules and stuff was kind of filler, which I understand isn’t really good, but it did have a purpose which was to show parameters for how the robot would be built, and competition intent.

Here’s an updated version, with way more pages and a lot of changes to the system and the format. It may come off a bit awkward because all names were replaced and a few images were removed for privacy.

Hi, I’m from team 85657A (Based in Queensland, Australia), and are seeing if we’d be able to take some inspiration from your notebook design in ours for the up and coming 2025/26 season. Full credits will be given within the openings pages. We just found it really unique and love it loads.

Totally fine, love to see it! If it interests you, here’s an updated version of the book that’s won us a Design, Innovate, and Excellence award here in Ohio.

This is pretty good! I was about to say that there are too few pictures, but you seemed to rectify that mistake later on int the notebook. The titles are a bit vague sometimes. Otherwise Great notebook.
(p.s. I don’t think reorganizing the notebook is allowed.)

Yeah, what I’m probably going to do before States (very competitive, i’m in Ohio HS)
1: Making a lot of page names smaller so that i can fit more descriptive titles
2: Distributing entries to fit the design process better, rather than just basically being “create/test” 99% of the time
3: General design changes like just smoother looks

p.s. it’s allowed, just really discouraged and generally disliked by judges, and honestly can be better if you don’t as it shows that you have been making good changes and progress, and i shouldn’t have done it (though my previous (book-wide) organizational changes were just adding the colored bars to the tops of pages and replacing all the "I"s and "My"s with more team centered words.) Do not do it unless it’s basic re-categorization of pages or something, really. I probably changed more than I should have myself.

However that’s not even what that specific line was referring to, this one just means that the pages after that one are going to be formatted differently so that they can be more effective.

Yeah, what my team does for tiitling the pages it mechanism x.y.z. Because most of our work follwed the design process (identifying the problem, brainstorming solutoins etc.) we have an entire iteration of the design process within each entry. the numbering system also hepl lable cycles. I’m not a judge, but I would think they would like to know what the page is about when reading the Table of Contents. Good luck!
