Off the shelf RJ11 Cable Safetey

My team has run out of the regular vex cable heads and wires, and we know that the wire type is seemingly RJ11. However, I read another forum post that said using off the shelf components would be potentially dangerous due to extreme current load.

My team has an existing robot using all legal components and wiring, and plan never to attend a competition using the illegal RJ11 cables, however we are also building a new robot and would like to test certain components. Would simply using these for testing pose an unnecessary danger? What about using them for low-current/wattage demanding components instead of motors, like rotational sensors and distance sensors?

Again, I plan to never use these illegal cables in competition, but merely for testing, as we don’t have any connectors and wont for a while. But I wont use them if its dangerous.

(This is probably more of a question for official vex employees but I would like all input.)

What you do in testing at home is up to you. There isn’t an inspector in the build space checking on what you are doing.

As you noted, you need to be all legal VEX components for events.

ugh, dont do it, even for non-competition use - I believer James Pearman has addressed this in the past (use the search function  )

What I recommend you do:

  • buy bulk V5 cable from VEX - the four pack for smart field controller might be thriftiest
  • buy the VEX V5 crimping tool - it has the right depth present for stripping cables (follow the directions on packaging)
  • buy rj11 connectors from amazon or where ever - they are cheap - I am pretty sure VEX are in the market ball park

Having such a setup will serve you well for years.
