Omni Wheel Drive

Has anyone built a kiwi drive and have any input on stability/lift location? I’m planning on mounting a lift so it faces between two of the wheels and am anticipating needing an anti tip of some kind but am not sure where I’ll put it.

I was also wondering what the main advantages of using 3 wheels instead of 4 is beyond saving a motor.

Thanks,
Dana

What is a kiwi drive?

three-wheel drive, oriented in a triangle.
kiwi drive

This is a kiwi drive. It’s basically an X drive with three wheals.

Edit: @galenk beat me to it.

Very interesting. Not sure why anyone would want to use that, but cool.

It’s omni-directional and it saves a motor. But, with the loss of the motor naturally comes the loss of torque and potential for speed. Plus it’s an awkward shape to build a robot on. So, yeah, I agree with you.
