One Man Team

I guess it all depends on why you’re doing VEX.

If you’re purely interested in technical aspects, then go it alone and have fun! You’ll no doubt continue to develop marketable technical skills.

But if you’re looking to build employable skills in teamwork and leadership, then isolating yourself is probably not a great way to go.

In team sports (and in teams of any kind… business, engineering… you name it) the difference between good players and great players is that the truly great players can lift their team mates to a higher level of performance.

There’s nothing wrong with knowing your goals, and knowing what you want from the season… and if your goal is to build your own robot and play in a few tournaments, without the hassle of managing and motivating others – then go for it by yourself, and have a good time!

If you’re looking for a real challenge, though… find some new team mates, and help raise them to your level of enthusiasm and ability. Getting humans to perform tasks efficiently is sometimes much more of a challenge than getting a machine to do it! Just keep in mind that this requires a bit of reflection and introspection and being able to understand how your actions and words are perceived by those you’re wishing to motivate. Leadership is a learned skill, and it requires a lot of practice.

Hope you have a great season, whatever you choose to do!
