Be carefull how your mating it. Click the part of the screw you want to attatch, in this case the head of it.
I don’t know what you’re trying to do with the screw, but I think I know your issue. It looks like you’re trying to put the screw in one of the holes in the gear. When using the fastened mate make sure to select the circle on the gear and not an edge. Or if it’s not a circle, (but this works for circles too), e.g. a square hole on a c-channel, you can hover over the face, hold shift, and select the center of the hole. I would also suggest if you want the head of the screw to be flush with gear, to select the underside of the head as one of the mates.
OnShape also has many resources available through the OnShape Learning Center. You can access this by clicking on an icon in the top right corner that looks like a head with gears in it. You can also click on the little question mark in the lower left corner of the box that pops up when you’re using a tool and it’ll take you to an article explaining how that tool works. Here is the article for fastened mates which I found through this method. I would highly suggest looking into these if you want to use other mates as well such as the revolute or slider mates.
Suppose you are using a fastened mate to assemble the drive train. In that case, there should be an option to let you transform horizontally, vertically, and rotationally when you first fasten the two pieces. If you are trying to connect these pieces within the part studio, I recommend you make an assembly instead, as that would make the process a lot easier. You might also want to double check any constraints you may have on the screw part or whatever you are trying to connect it to, to make sure that they do not conflict.
It looks like you may be selecting the wrong mate connector for your part(s). If you want a screw to be inserted into one of the holes on the gear, you need to select the correct spot on the screw. Jerry Palardy has a playlist that can explain the ins and outs of Onshape better than I can here:
