Passive or active spinner mech?

My team wants to add a doubler mech to our robot, but can’t decide wether to do it with pneumatics(active), or by having it fall over when the match starts, and just stay down(passive). What are the positives and/or negatives of both?

What is this? I usually know the vocabulary for mechanisms, but I don’t know what you’re talking about. Are there any examples online?

No idea what a doubler is, but in my engineering book passive using gravity always wins. Motors, pneumatics, etc can stop working. If gravity shuts off you have more problems than winning the match.

(NGL, there would be some of you in the head Refs ear during the chaos saying that gravity failed, that should be a field fault, and you want a replay.)

I meant to say doinker

pneumatics is your best option for a doinker because you will need to extend and bring it back since it will get in the way of your intake otherwise. I would not recommend making it motorized if you have pneumatics, since that’s one motor you can use on something else. If you don’t have access to pneumatics then you could probably just put a poly carb sheet or metal plate that slightly sticks out on the side of the robot to scoop away corners.
