People Asking Questions Answered in Manual

Hi all. I have seen many people asking questions that are clearly answered in the VEX Turning Point Manual. As such, I am wondering if the community should come up with a copy-paste response for people who ask these sort of questions. It could be something like:

Hi. This question is answered in the rulebook, as per . Please reference the manual for more information.

I think a short response like this would urge people that have not read the manual to read it. What do you all think?

I’ve seen multiple people, myself included, give canned answers, with varying levels of aggressiveness. Just make your own, being (within reason) as aggressive as you want to be.

There’s really no need for a community-wide canned response standard.

There always have been, and always will be, people like this, for better or for worse

I just added links to the game and Q&A to my signature… Not sure it will ever be effective - but I suspect making it easier to find the links is a good thing.

In my opinion I really don’t mind it. Everyone started asking these type of questions in the Q&A last year, and it seems like this year most of the Q&A’s are legitimate clarifications that are not directly pointed out by the manual. Sometimes, even when most of us know what X is, there are those other people who misinterpret X. So now they ask a question publically to make sure that whey are on the same page as most people. By saying “look at the game manual” to people even when publically asking a question, you’re going to start isolating people and make them start to have a fear of asking questions regarding the game manual. Just answer their questions, regardless if it is or isn’t in the game manual.

By giving polite answers to simple questions posted in the forums, along with the references to the game manual and specifically the section of the manual the answer is at, experienced members of the VEX community are actually mentoring these newbies on how to find what they need in the game manual, and the number of simple questions asked will start to go down (especially important, though, is that the Official Q&A will be much more concise and useful). Some questions will come up that legitimately need to be asked in the official Q&A, and those will be easily identified by the VEX community at large and get asked. But we will no longer need to see “unofficial answer to ____________” followed by the obligatory official Q&A answer on Fridays, and the simple questions and explanations will be received by the newbies almost immediately, rather than on Friday.
