True; but remember: Pneumatics. In my (non-vex) experience, they don’t really speed up. They just punch out quickly. And when you factor in gravity and air resistance, they aren’t negligible. It ends up being about 50%, if not maybe a bit more as you suggested.

Okay, I just like 50%. It’s an easy number to work with. It’s pretty much impossible to calculate a non-perfect elastic collision. 50% is a nice round number to work with.

Or maybe I just don’t know as much about punchers as I think I do, in which case, please just tell me to shut up. If I’m that wrong, I can’t be really helping.

While a flywheel, catapult, or puncher is definitely more efficient both in terms of maintenance and motor usage, I do think a pneumatic launcher would highly increase your chances of getting a design award, so it comes down to what you value.

Agreed, but it wont “increase” their chances of winning a design award. I just wanted to clear the air a bit. I didn’t want this team building this solely to receive the design award when it doesn’t provide any advantage over other designs in terms of winning the award.

Then it would win an “Innovate” award, right? At most regionals, it doesn’t qualify for anything, but it may at state, depending on your allocated Worlds spots.

@TitanRey15 I’m not so sure. Usually, Vex(/RECF) makes their criteria the same across the globe. (Except for that NZ thing…) I haven’t seen anything that says it’s different anywhere. It’s an interesting concept if it’s true, though. Can anyone confirm?
