When Sprockets are under resistance it might cause them to skip or the chain to snap. To avoid this what can I do (besides not using them). Is there a way to do this mechanically (torque limiter?) or perhaps in code (maybe a way to detect resistance)?
you could make it longer and create a device to create tension and that way you can adjust it.

That would work.
Inside the yellow circles are tensioners I used for the chain in my LEGO Push Back prototype. You could do something similar by having a free-spinning gear of spacer rub against the chain to tighten the chain if it is loose. If your chain is too tight, add a sprocket and adjust the tension so it is not as tight.
When it comes to chains, you must have the perfect amount of resistance - I learned this the hard way. Too little, and the chain will skip. Too much, and the chain will snap. Once you have found the right amount, it will work. Just use the methods listed above to find the right amount.
