So I am a first year VEX student, but this is also my last year of VRC since I also am a senior. However, I really want to go to worlds. Does anyone know how to calculate the probability of getting to worlds? Maybe the Elo rankings would help with this, but I don’t know. Also, I’m not asking anyone to calculate this for our team, I’m just wondering how to do it myself.
Being from GA, your region has 19 total spots (16 HS spots) for Worlds, and your HS State Championship has 60 total spots. So your chances would be 16/60 if your team qualifies for State. For qualifying off the skills scores your chances are 35/ all HS teams in the world.
If you play well, you’ll get to worlds. Also, if all else fails, build a skills specific bot, write a full 60 second program, and try to get in the top 35.
Above all, think with your goal in mind. I like to think of it this way:
“If you think like the people who win worlds, build like the people who win worlds, drive like the people who win worlds, and program like the people who win worlds, aren’t you just the people who win worlds?”
Of course I haven’t made it myself yet, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
That’s a great mindset…but I thought it was top 50 that went to worlds?
Also thanks @nichols jj
It sounds like they swapped it from flat 50 between the two types of schools to top 15 ms and top 35 hs.
Well dang
There are some additional considerations for ways of getting to worlds.

Look at the online challenges. The teams that win those spots are just as invited as the excellence award winner for your state.

You can get to worlds based on skills score without being in the top 35 for high school. At your state competition, there are certain awards that will get you there. I have not looked up all of them in your state, but in most states, the excellence award, tournament champions, skills champions at state, and tournament finalists are often among the awards that generally are automatic. It is possible, if not likely, that some teams will occupy more than one of those spots. The excellence award winner may be the skills champion and on the championship alliance. All spots to worlds that are not filled by the specific awards given at state will then be filled by the highest global skills scores in your state who are not otherwise awarded spots from the awards at the state tournament.
For example, your skills score my be in ranked at 250 in the world but 17 best in GA. You would still have a shot at going to worlds depending on how many of the people above you from GA are qualified to go to worlds through awards won at state.
Thanks @blatwell
No problem. As a new team, if I were you, I would focus on the online challenges and a skills specific robot. You need to think through the 1 minute strategy for driving and for programming. The two may be different. Good luck and hope to see you there.
