When I turn on the brain, the screen changes to the numbers 1-12 and at the top of the screen it says, “Update Needed”. At number 6 it says, “Motor”. What do I need to do to fix this? The robot will not drive.
Thank you!

Hi Coach B.
We’re sorry that you have encountered this issue. The VEX IQ Robot Brain, Controller, Smart Motors, Smart Radio, and all sensors (except the Bumper Switch) run a robotics operating system called VEXos. VEXos is typically updated once per year with new improvements, features, and fixes, with the latest version being VEXos 2.0.1.
The numbers on the Update Needed Robot Brain LCD Screen correspond to port numbers - this means that the Smart Motor connected to Port 6 is running outdated VEXos firmware and needs to be updated. To resolve this, please please go to vexiq.com/vexos and download and install the VEXos Utility onto your Windows or Mac computer.
After the VEXos Utility is installed, please insert a Robot Battery to your Robot Brain, tether your Controller to your Robot Brain, and connect all Smart Motors and sensors that need a firmware update to the Robot Brain. Then connect the Robot Brain to your computer using the USB Cable, and turn on the Robot Brain, then open the VEXos Utility. Any devices running outdated versions of VEXos will be highlighted orange in the VEXos Utility - all devices highlighted green are up to date. If you have any devices that need an update, click the large Install button in the VEXos Utility to begin the update process.
If you have any additional concerns, please contact our technical support folks at [email protected] or by calling +1-903-453-0802 for more detailed assistance in resolving this issue.
