so we have a drive train using the small treads and i just wanted to know which gear ratio would be the best for speed and smoothness. Thanks
Hi Cheeta!
So can you post a picture of your robot? There is only one size of treads, so I’m confused by “small treads”
Treads are driven by sprockets. They come in a number of different sizes. So it would depend on how fast you want the robot to go, that would determine the robot speed and the size of the sprockets.
Historically, robots with treads as a motive force (ie like a real tank) have not done well. Treads grip really well, are good with mud and trees and undergrowth in the real world. On the pretty much flat plastic floor they are not a first choice.
Picture would help!
oh hi, sorry fot the late response. so right now the robot is not available for a pic but in vex iq the two types of treads for the gears. the first one is the small skinny ones which are used mostly for wheels. and then thers are the ones like youd see on an intake to pick up the balls in viqc squared away.
“Best for speed and smoothness” seems pretty subjective. In the end your team will have to decide what is “best”, especially if you get several different answers here. It might be better to design and conduct an experiment. Record it all in your engineering notebook and it might really impress the judges.
ok, thanks!
