We are trying to put air into the tank but every time we pump the bike pump it just goes out the release.
What do you mean by release?
On the soleniod, it has R (release) and P (that goes to the piston)
Actually the P port should be connected to the reservoir (I’m not sure why it’s labeled P). The piston should be connected to the single unmarked port on the other side of the solenoid.

I’ll try it out tomorrow switching the unlabeled to the piston and the P from the reservoir, but it’s a little odd, because we followed the picture on the VEX site and shows it the other way 
Whoops… The picture is backwards. We’ll get that fixed right away.
