Hi, so my team is running into some trouble. As mentioned in a previous post I have a team of 30 people and I am going to have to split them into 3 teams. The problem is we only have 2 V5 brains and a bunch of cortex stuff. We tried to order a new V5 Brain in August, but it won’t be coming until next year(I think it said Quarter 2 of next year). I am assuming Quarter 2 means March and that is basically the end of the season. We were just going to use the Cortex stuff instead for this season, but as per the rule R6, we can’t use Cortex motors. Is there any way to at least revoke this rule for just this year since all the brains are on back order due to the chip shortage?
This question would be better posed to the Q&A forum here Q&A: VRC 2021-2022: Tipping Point : Robot Events.
If you haven’t ordered the extra brain, I would just do it. Given the state of the chip shortage, I doubt that stock will be improving any time soon.
It is unlikely Cortex will be allowed this year. I would contact VEX sales department and see if they can help expedite. Also, contact your RECF Team Engagement Manager and see if they can get the word out to teams in your region, you might be able to borrow one from another organization.
I’m also having the same problem. I just decided to start an independent team this year and all I have is a super kit bought a few years ago that comes with Cortex. I emailed REC foundation to see if there’s any solutions, and I’m waiting for their reply. For now I’m just looking for people that are willing to sell V5 system if they have spare sets.
The big issue you will find is that organizations with multiple teams are generally public schools, so they might not be in a position to sell the gear. However, loaning out gear can be done, as we have when V5 first came out and supplies were limited, something to do with “ships in 8 weeks”.
I will redouble my recommendation, reach out to your RECF Team Engagement Manager and see if match making for loaners can happen.
We are all in this together.
and Welcome to VEX Forums!
I agree that it’s unfortunate that the year cortex is banned is also the year that v5 components are all out of stock.
However as @lacsap said, that rule is unlikely to be changed and your best bet is to reach out either through your local recf rep or directly to local teams to see if you can secure any loans through them. You’re unlikely to find any sellers of v5 equipment here.
@AndySchaafs and I have responded to a couple of individual requests regarding this thread. I am not able to promise anything, but Andy’s team is working very hard to work with teams that have Cortex and need to upgrade to V5 to compete this season. As @lacsap and @Xenon27 said, please reach out to your Team Engagement Manager if you are in this situation.
