PTO Gear Meshing

When designing a PTO mechanism, how do you make sure the gears always mesh properly?

The main issue you have to worry about is the trasition between the two states of the PTO, the gears naturally want to mesh properly, you just need to make that transition easier.

One method of doing this that I have seen is by beveling the edge of the gears where they meet. This gives you more forgiveness when forcing them together; the gears may not be perfectly aligned when you try to mesh them together, and that is normal.

You can fillet the teeth so that their edges are rounded out

Great suggestions, thank you!

Whoops. fillet would be the more correct term. That’s my bad.
