I have questions regarding online notebooks for V5. Online notebooks go by the same judging rules as physical ones. One of the requirements for an outstanding notebook is having unedited entries. If you are typing your notebook, how can the judges tell if it is edited or not?
The official V5RC Engineering Notebook Rubric is listed here:
Judging Resource: Engineering Notebook Rubric – REC Library
There is no mention on the rubric of having unedited entries. This may have been a requirement in the past, but it doesn’t seem to be in the rubric anymore.
You are still required to have dated and chronological entries with a table of contents, though, as listed in the “Notebook Format” section:
Five (5) points if the notebook has evidence that documentation was done in sequence
with the design process. This can take the form of dated entries with the names of
contributing students included and an overall system of organization. For example,
numbered pages and a table of contents with entries organized for future reference.
Partial points may be awarded if this is inconsistent or incomplete.
If having unedited entries is worthy of deducting points, what’s the point of being human? Wouldn’t that mean that if you made, say, a grammatical error, you’re just screwed for the rest of time? That’s incredibly dumb. Especially on a computer
I don’t think this is a case because you submit a pdf and not a Link to the doc. And even if you submit a link, you could just make a copy and it removes all version history.
Not really. If you aren’t an editor you can’t see that. And even if you could, in the 10-15 minutes a judge has to look at your notebook they would not have the time to look.
However, it is pretty easy for judges to tell just by reading through your notebook. It’s clear if you’re not legitimately following the design process.
In the “Guide to Judging: Judging Engineering Notebooks,” it says, “Each page/entry contains information identifying the student author(s).” Does this refer to the signatures at the bottom of the page, of something else?
Could be a signature or could be just the student’s name. It also doesn’t have to be on the bottom of the page to my knowledge either–just at the end of the entry
