Questions about our engineering notebook

First off I would like to go ahead and thank anyone that offers any advice to me. I greatly appreciate it.

So I am the main note booker on my team and need some help. I just need a few questions answered.

Is it fine if our notebook is a binder(if not what is the easiest way to change it)?

What is a good ratio to have between pictures and words?

How often should I be updating it?

Thank you again,

A binder is fine as your notebook, and you should put 1-2 pictures every page. I would say update it twice a week depending on how often you guys meet. Hope I could help!

If I were a judge, I would not be very pleased with a binder. I assume you mean a three-ring open binder.

It is important to show that notebook entries are in the order they were written and it is very easy to move around pages in a binder. If you do go with a binder, I would recommend using a pen to write the page numbers.

For pages and words, I would say that about every other page should have a picture of diagram. It makes your notebook more engaging.

You should update it whenever there is progress on the robot that needs to be documented.

Good luck with your notebook!

@Micahy321 I am curious about this, as a coach I had to scan in my team’s paper notebook for the first time this week. They are using the Vex notebook. In order to make scanning easy, I had to basically tear the pages out. So I specifically asked them if they’d use a 3 ring binder to make it easier to scan in next time. Thoughts on this situation?

I see where you are coming from.

Maybe three-ring is the best option for your teams. In that case, maybe consider buying a date stamp to put the date on every page. Or just writing the date in pen would be fine.

Here is this for reference
