I would like to get a book that shows step by step instructions for constructing a bot from components in the supplied parts file and assemblies I have built and saved. I don’t need a lot of info on making my own parts (other than, perhaps, a sawn off Vex axle or plate) or creating iMates - just the building basics in the kind of detail that an impatient 9th grade student (or his teacher!) can understand . I won’t say price is no objecct but I’m OK with $70 or so. Any suggestions, please?

Pretty sure this was one resource I started with.

I also used this (general, not VEX specific) book.
there is a steep learning curve, it takes time, even when you know what you are doing, to create a full robot assembly like this one takes me probably 20+ hours.
