Refinery Process

Hi, Jamil from 10863A here. Engineering isnt neccasarily a neat process, suffice to say. Coming from both 10863A and 10863B this is some of our first years at vex, and we wouldn’t really categorize our last seoson as the best on earth. We’ve gotten our robots to a point where they have multiple optimized and efficient mechanisms, our ony question now is how to bring our robots to a fresh looking and refined state. Our robot now is what some may consider as a rough draft. We want (before states or regionals) to have a robot that is entirley fresh and almost manufactured looking, do any teams have tips or suggestions on how to make our final design that we plan to take all the way to worlds more refined and smooth looking.

My team’s robot is almost a finished product but we may still do a winter rebuild. We use components from reveals across YouTube to help us make a rock solid robot. We don’t however encourage plain copying an entire build as you could have some weaknesses that way. Good luck this season though!

I myself love the rough looking designs that show all the steps and features but if you dont I would recommend cuting out a peice of plastic stencil a logo out and spray paint it on.

Is plastic VRC legal, if so what types and what dimensions.

For most questions about the rules, please review the game manual prior to asking questions on the forum. Here’s a link: VRC Over Under Game Manual - VEX Robotics In regards to your question, look at rule R18 If you have additional questions or need clarifications after reading the manual, please feel free to post.

To start, I am not one of the best people at robotics, so my tips wont hold as much merit as many of the other tips given to this thread. But one thing to make it cleaner is to prioritize it throughout the entire build. Sometimes when making a cut, I get the urge to use bolt cutters, which are more convenient but make an easier cut. As small mistakes and compromises pile up, the robot begins to have less clean cuts, and look less refined than it actually is. Have a constant mindset for a clean design, and as long as you stick with it the robot will usually end up looking “entirley fresh and almost manufactured looking” in your words.

Also a good note to make is that most of the teams that look so “refined” also have rebuilt their robot countless times to make it efficient and to clean it up( wire management, paint, cutting, drilling, mounting, etc.) once they have a good competitive bot it also usually looks “manufactured” as well. I hope this helps!
