First seed was likely not a great bot in their eyes and got their rank from a very good schedule. First seed likely knew this, however, and by choosing the next four teams and forcing their rejection, they ensured that neither of those teams could join forces, significantly increasing their chances of winning.

Most good teams choose alliances by their actual performance and abilities and/or other ranking factors like OPR/DPR. Our team in our last competition was in 3rd and decided to team up with a team in 23rd place because we knew we worked well with that team being their alliance partner in the past, and we knew that they had a good bot. (The reason why the team was so low was because they were using their secondary driver which made a lot of rule violations like touching the platform in last 30 and lost a lot of matches because of that.) We got into the semifinals and barely lost against the top alliance. Also both of the alliances ranked higher than us also chose teams lower in the ranks.
