Research Sources

Hello, our team is doing a section on researching other team’s designs through early robot reveals and also just researching parts. We want to provide sources and citations to give credibility. Would using a QR code that connects to a spreadsheet (google sheets) that shows all of our sources work?

Why use a qr code can’t you just give hem credit on your engineering notebook?

That would probably not be ideal I would just recommend to say where you got the inspiration form so for example if it was 99v. I would list their name the video you got it from and maybe the channel if you really want to

That could definitely work, my team cites what gave us inspiration while explaining or brainstorming that solution in the book

We would also like to provide the actual links so the judges can see themselves. Also, there are times when there isn’t enough space to put that.

There is no page limit for DEN… very unlikely that there isn’t enough space to put in a proper citation.

I’d say just type in whatever the team name is (i.e. 1234A) and then hyperlink the video to that text (i.e. 1234A). If you’re citing local teams/teams that didn’t have a robot reveal, I’d say hyperlink their RobotEvents team page to their team name. Good luck this season!

Do note that you should give meaningful information about the work you are citing, and not just a URL. Think what happens when the team takes down a video or post? As for space, I don’t get it - be thorough. If you are providing a link, this implies you are doing notebook digitally, so space not an issue. What may be an issue is judges not having access to internet during all or parts of judging process - so another down side of depending on live links.

Judges aren’t going to look through actual links. I have a mentor that has judged many vex competitions and according to him, the judges typically don’t review links and QR codes because that would take too much time. He recommended for me take a picture of the part you’re crediting and label it as “TEAM (insert number)”

The current RECF Student-Centered Policy says the following on citations:

Advances in ideas and technology are often built on the knowledge of others and it is important to give credit to those contributions. Teams that use or adapt mechanical design ideas and code developed by someone other than the students on the team should cite these sources in their program specific notebook and code. During team interviews, students should describe how these contributions were utilized in the development of their machine. Teams may select their preferred format of citation, which should generally include the following information:

  • Title of resource or source code
  • Author(s)
  • Date of publication or release
  • Version (if applicable)
  • Location (where to find the source)

Many online resources are available to learn more about the importance of citation, what to cite, and how to cite sources. Teams that use or adapt outside sources are encouraged to research more about citation.
