Does anyone know of any led strips that are small enough to have under a bot, preferably like 2m long? They need to have either a small battery pack or should hook up into the V5 Brain for power easily. I don’t want to have to solder anything. Seeing as teams have done this before, what have you guys used?
Since LED’s fall under non-functional decoration, there isn’t a specific set of LED’s that everybody uses. Any generic roll of LED’s off amazon will suffice, and most rolls can be cut to however long you need. Although an isolated power supply (non-vex battery) is legal for powering non-functional LED’s, using a microcontroller is not legal, so make sure to find a set that doesn’t use one.
Also be careful with color selection. Some judges are more harsh than others when ruling what is or isn’t allowed, but generally using colors that have the potential to conflict with an opponents vision sensor must be avoided, and colors that cause alliance color confusing are also illegal. If you’ve got blue license plates but a red underglow, this can cause unnecessary confusion for refs and spectators.
Wait if this is the case, do you think its is ok if I use small amounts of red to paint my bot?
Yea you should be fine. It’s sort of a gray area that’s up to your local refs discretion. Generally if the paint isn’t too distracting you won’t have any issues.
Yeah, I figured, I was thinking about using it to highlight accents. Nice to have a second opinion tho.
I could always cover it with masking tape if there was an issue
The only rule I know of that needs to be carefully followed with regard to painting robots is that one should be sure not to paint robots too similarly to field elements. It is stated under rules that teams can be disqualified for attempting to mimic field element colors to fool the vision sensor.
