Robot max size conformation

My team has started to cad our robot and we found the game manual size explanation confusing. Can someone clarify the starting size and expansion limit.

The game manual states pretty clearly, β€œRobots must fit within an 18” x 18” x 18” volume.” This is an 18 inch cube, so 18 inches in height, length, and width.
It also is very clear about expansion. β€œThe Robot can never be larger than 22” wide or 22” long.” and β€œNo part of the Robot may exceed an overall height of 22” at any point during the Match (must always be able to fit within a hypothetical 22”x22”x22” cubic sizing box).”

This is basically the same as beginning the match, just a bigger cube. The robot can never exceed 22 inches in length, width, or height during the match, but must start the match not exceeding 18 inches in length, width, or height.
Here is the game manual if you need it:

What did you find confusing?

The Robot can never be larger than 22” wide or 22” long (must always be able to fit within a 22”x22” square horizontal footprint).

No part of the Robot may exceed an overall height of 22” at any point during the Match (must always
be able to fit within a hypothetical 22”x22”x22” cubic sizing box).

This was taken straight from the 1.0 game manual. You may be looking at the 0.1 game manual, and the GDC has clarifyed since that the origanal wording was not their intent, and have changed it.

Basicly, your robot must start the match in a hypothetical cube that is 18 18 18", and can then expand to 22 22 22" once the match has started.

Examples of Minor Violations include, but are not limited to:
β—‹ Loose wires
β—‹ Broken zip ties / rubber bands
β—‹ Bent or broken mechanical components that are not used for strategic gain

This is part of rule , and it states the only reason the robot can expand past 22" legally is for accidental and non-stratigic incidents, so design your robot to prevent against this to prevent any violations.

Anyways, I hope this helped, and best of luck with your cad!

Are you in IQ or V5?

IQ

No additional horizontal expansion. Infinite vertical expansion

V5

Expant up to 22" x 22" x 22"
