Robot Reveal- 8505X

So, we just finished our new robot design for the 2015 Nothing but Net. Our team would like to hear the thoughts about the design. Here’s a picture:

Last year we made world with this design.

It’s sad to see design convergence this strong this early. I have seen several of these identical robots at competitions around the country.

Gear ratio?

What’s the firing rate? I can’t tell from the picture.
Do you have a video?
Also, is that a low or a high lift?
But seriously, good luck with your future build.

We changed the gear ratio to the highest torque value so we can lift any robot to 12 inches and above, and our best driver can score a ball every 5 seconds. I will upload video later

I must respectfully disagree with @tabor473. Last year at worlds, most of the top teams shared very similar designs with triple cube intakes, skyrise arms, and scissor or double reverse four bar lifts because this design was simply superior to the other designs. Given that so many teams have used @spxrobotix’s design, I think that there is no question that this is the best design and teams with this design will make up a majority of worlds. Well, good luck to you @spxrobotix, may your incredible design live up to it’s potential!

Nice try trying to be funny !

I don’t appreciate your disregard for the hard work we put into this robot. This is a serious post.

Isn’t the robot gonna tip if it its holding a robot heavier than itself? Is the claw even enough to grip a robot?

I’m sorry, but this is so disrespectful. This team has clearly poured countless hours into research and building; don’t try to devalue their serious, earnest, 100% non-joking accomplishments.

#AllRobotsAreBeautiful

I suppose you could actually go to a competition with this design, but a) you certainly wouldn’t post a legitimate reveal of this design since it is an exact replica of many other designs, so you must be joking, and b) you’re smarter than that. About the high lift, I think more teams should consider using a 1 motor 1:7 gear ratio lift that can ahem obviously lift a 20 pound robot and not tip given the presence of very aggressive anti-tip bars that strangely do not show up in the picture. I also think it’s clever to use only 5 of the available 12 motors because of the reduced weight that allow the robot to drive faster. Have you guys had any issues with recovery rate when you are shooting driver loads?

According to Karthik’s strategic brainstorming procedure:

Given that a team has nothing but starter kit, nobody but a few starting kids. Weak team build which limits potential. Need to be reasonable about robot complexity.

  • What is the scoring action that has the highest reward-effort ratio?
    – Being high elevated. (not elevating, but being elevated.)
  • What are the highest ranked strategic actions required to achieve this scoring action?
    – 1. mobility, which means to have a base 2. weight, which means to have a light weighted robot

Boom. Ideal strategic design there is. Am I right Karthik? hahahahaha

Just to clarify I’m joking

I really like the use of steel 1x25s as structural pieces. So many people overlook them when trying to strengthen their lift.

How is it supposed to shoot if its just a claw?

@TitaniumNyanKat, why do you have to be so reasonable? If team 850x just sets their mind to working hard and following their dreams, I’m sure they can get an 0.01 second fire rate with 100% accuracy and a 0.01 second high elevate! The real question is why doesn’t everybody use this incredible design?

Actually, I think that’s a flywheel. When 5" wheels spin fast enough (it seems around 5000000 to 8000000 RPM), it actually looks like a Vex claw. I don’t know why this is, but I’ve noticed it before, too.
Also, I really like how the flywheel angle is adjustable with the arm. That way, the flywheel doesn’t need to change its speed to adjust its range.

Actually, it works the other way around. Vex designed the claw based on the appearance of spinning wheels, sort of as an homage to the invention of the wheel 2016 years ago.

Hey, I wasn’t trying t be rude, I was just asking how the claw is supposed to launch a ball into the high goal.

I am confused.

It was a joke. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this thread mostly seems like a joke (if it’s not, sorry, I didn’t mean to offend anyone).
