I read the last post about robot size and was not quite sure how to continue the questions is I started a new one. Based on my understanding of the rules, a robot could totally fill the volume of 13"x19"x15" before the match starts as long as the area touching the field is no larger than 13"x13". Given the fact that the students can fix their robot during the match by bringing their robot to the wall and placing their controller on the ground, couldn’t they technically stand their robot up once the game begins so that now it is 19" tall rather than 15" tall? Based on what I read this would be legal because the rules do not state what condition or orientation the robot needs to be returned to the field after repairs. I would appreciate your input. Thank you.
No, this would not be legal. Let’s take a look at the applicable rule.
This rule is designed to allow students to fix robots that need assistance (i.e. They’ve become stuck, or fallen over). This rule is not designed to allow teams to employ strategies to get around the height limit. Teams may not interact with the robot with the goal of reorienting as opposed to retrieving a robot that needs assistance. Thus the strategy that you have described is illegal.
Thanks for the thoughtful question!
