For our EDD class we need to take a survey to make sure we have justification for our problem. Our idea deals with issues we feel teams have had during competition.
My son built transport/storage boxes as his Eagle Scout project for the middle school team he had just graduated from. Each team has a 2 part kit… a storage box that holds a robot and the other accoutrements a team needs (laptop, tools, controller, etc ) and then it’s on a dolly that can be used to take robots from the pits to the field during tournaments. They look great and have significantly cleaned up the classroom we store everything in.
For our team it depends on the tournament, if it is a regional tournament, probably not. But for Worlds, maybe depending on where the fields are relevant to where your pit is. I used a robot cart in Toss up because the field was far from were my pit was, plus my robot was heavy.
This sounds interesting, could you provide pictures?
I’ll start a separate post with some pictures and details… won’t be able to get detailed pics until our next practice on Saturday.
Here is the cart that my team has. It is by far the best cart we have used and can hold any boxes we need to carry into the competition as well as carry the robot to matches. This is VERY useful at worlds due to the walking distances depending on what division you are in. (I would wait for the price to go down though because it used to be much cheaper.)
I think this would be a cool idea. I probably wouldn’t want a full size cart (as you can get those everywhere), but maybe a 20"x20" box like shape that gives you an elevated platform to put the robot on top of, and organized storage in the bottom where you can put everything you would need to have with you at a match just in case (setup jigs, a few tools, extra batteries, screws, zip ties, etc.).

Harbor Freight also has ones like that for cheaper (both in price and quality).

My team uses a colapsable dolly. It is much easier than carrying a robot to matches.
I think if you could include inbuilt tray slots, or something like that for storing spare nuts, bolts, batteries etc, A space for your robot and maybe even a space for a programming laptop it would be pretty awesome. Just make sure you use decent wheels, no one wants one of their wheels to seize up walking to a match and their robot to go for a small flight into the ground (unless its a aeroplane).
These are pretty much all things we plan on adding to it, along with a charging station because at a lot of competitions we have had to set our batteries on the ground.
We used something like this when we were at Worlds this year (not sure if it’s the same exact one).
It folds up and it even had a seatbelt to hold the robot in. It also has these brakes.
We were going to make something new from scratch but the parts cost more than getting this thing shipped for free and we had to get one for my grandma anyway. It worked better than another old cart we made because the wheels on this Walmart thing are a little cushy and parking lots made our DIY cart vibrate like crazy. The larger wheels help a lot when it’s bumpy outside. You can sit in it, too, and push stuff back and forth from your pit if it’s far away.
Woa, this sounds awesome! #Hyped to see this. Just one more suggestion, Maybe you should make it lockable so you can transport this around in the back of a van or something without stuff going everywhere and it would be a all in one robot station
Make sure you show it off on the forums when your finished
Wow, we used that exact one It’s nothing great aesthetically, but its maneuverability was pretty nice.
I would like to throw a suggestion out there, too. Occasionally, I need to program on the move, so having a seat on the transport box would be awesome. I would probably sit on it even when I’m not making last minute changes to the program, though
Davio, I started a different thread that has some pictures…
