Rusting VEX parts?????

I was wondering, since my basement is very humid, and that is where I will be storing my VEX starter kit. My question is: will the metal VEX parts RUST???
Please reply back with your thoughts, comments, and expiriences about this issue.

i am not exactly sure, take a small 1x1 square, and soak it in water, then take it out and let it sit for a while, if it rusts, then there’s your andwer.

PS: i would not reccommend keeping it in a humid place, but if you have to, get a dehumidifier, they reduce humidity, and dont cost over $100, i have one, and it really works

pm me for questions or comments

I believe that the parts have a coating on them that inhibits rust. I could be wrong though

ya but after you cut, sand, and modifly parts like i do they may rust?

I believe Tmaxx is right that the parts have a protective coating and presumably if you cut or sand the parts that removes the coating in that area therefore that area would start to rust.

I had not thought about cut parts good point.

The dehumidifiers have everyday maintenance. (empty water tank every day.) I know from my experience with dehumidifiers they work in small rooms and even in small rooms may overflow and flood the place. ALso they are pretty loud.

Most allow an attachment for a hose that you can run to a floor drain.

Is that possible, and were would u drain it to? Would you have it siphon it out?

Nope it’s just gravity.

how do you attach it without leaking??

dehumidifiers can detect when the tank is full, and empty it in the toilet, that easy.

PS: they need emptying only about once every 3-4 days, but not at the start, they take time to work, and for whoever said about leaking, they dont, they are threaded the way the hoze is.

yes i found that out i continued the conversation in pm because it was getting off topic, I thought you meant add a hose that was not built in. I didn’t know that they existed.

Even if it does rust, they make baths that you can soak the parts to take the rust off.
(I have heard cola also works well…)

If it does rust, it will not rust all the way thru - only on the uncoated part that is exposed, and stay rusted on that surface.

Back to topic…

Do your metal parts get covered with this white chalk substance. The metal parts don’r feel like metal they are have a chalky feeling and are whiter.

what are you talking about chalky substances maybe it is just you?

The metal is coated with a very thin layer of something white (maybe it is rusting but I doubt it)

I’ve never noticed any layer of anything coming off so I don’t know what you’re talking about. Try to explain more or pictures.

I dont know what it is but I have seen this on our robot around the wheels and gears. I think its plastic.
