San Antonio VEX Competition

Does anyone know if there will be a webcast of the VEX Robotics Competition Presented by the U.S. Army?

There will be some really good teams there and should provide for some exciting matches.

Last year, a new world programming record was set there, and we could see another one this year.

The U.S. Army really does a great job with this competition. Good luck to all attending teams!

Yes it is supposed to be

The HD stream on VRC TV 10 is too much stream for most computers ! Channel 1 stream works much better at lower resolution.

Eliminations are about to start ! Here are rankings for one of the divisions.

Congrats to 2587z, 9090c, and 231z for being tournament Champions.

And 4080A for Excellence.

Here is the Army promo video for the San Antonio event. Our “D” team got a little air time on this video. http://www.dvidshub.net/video/318867/us-army-all-american-bowl-vex-robotics#.UsmVJrTFkYK

We noticed that someone commented on the livestream questioning how 4080A could get the Excellence award when 9090C was the tournament, robot skills, and programming skills champion, so our mentor explained to us how the Excellence award recipient is determined. We looked and found the Excellence award calculator spreadsheet to help clear up confusion and help people understand how this award is given. It is a very objective process. 4080A was in the top 10 on both skills so we got 1 point for each of those, we were in the top 8 of the qualification rounds so we got a point for that, we won the energy award which is a judged award so we got 1 point for that, and if you recall Mr. Ormond mentioned while giving the award, that we were finalist for 4 other awards. These points more than maxed out the Excellence award which only goes to 7. even if 9090C maxed out at 7 we managed to pull off a few more SP’s which seeded us higher to break any tie that might have occurred. To seed higher than either of the 9090 teams and receive an Excellence Award at an event that they were competing in is more than we can fathom, they have always set the bar higher than we believed we could ever reach.

Hopefully we can find the issues with our robot or programming that left us dead on the field every match and made our autonomous and programming skills a game of roulette when connected to a field controller. We were lucky to have had a judge watch our robot score 51 points while testing our programming skills on the practice field.

Hopefully this calculator will help make sense of how the award is given, it was certainly educational for us.

I was going to mention it since I also saw that comment, and I’m glad SBD addressed it.

Perhaps I’m reading too far into this and I’m a bit sensitive to the issue since many similar claims have been made in the past about judge bias regarding my club’s teams, but I think its a bit unprofessional and insulting for a teacher/mentor of all people to make statements like that.

Definitely had a great time at this very competitive tournament. Our robot’s new design was very much rushed and there is a lot of work to be done to get it to where we want it. That said, we still did a good job and enjoyed making it to division finals with 2587K and 2158X.

One interesting thing we encountered was the large balls being greatly deflated. One of the refs told us this was because the setting was outdoors in the cold. Something to consider if you know you will be going to a venue like this. The balls ended up sinking into our intake making it very difficult to launch as we did during practice, for example.
